PhD student in Economics (m/f)

“Analysing environmental policies for a
sustainable transformation of the energy sector“

Work description
The position is embedded into the Helmholtz-Alliance “Future infrastructures for meeting energy demands. Towards sustainability and social compatibility“, a joint research effort of eight Helmholtz Centres and university partners in Germany. The alliance examines options to design and promote the transformation of energy infrastructures by an optimal coordination between politics, technology, consumer behavior and societal participation. It builds on the interdisciplinary collaboration of social scientists, philosophers, engineers and system analysts. The PhD position particularly focuses on the economic evaluation of the environmental policy framework to guide a sustainable transformation of infrastructures in the energy sector. Research will address possible barriers to transformation as well as suitable policy responses.

Prerequisites for candidates
Strong motivation to complete a PhD in the field of economics, high interest in both theoretical and empirical work, and scientific enthusiasm are key prerequisites. Expected backgrounds are a master/diploma degree in economics or economics-related subjects, preferably experience in environmental economics, energy economics, institutional eco­no­mics, and/or econometrics, and very good written and oral communication skills in English and German.

Conditions
We offer excellent supervision in a motivated team that works on environmental policy analysis. The successful candidate will be recruited for three years under employment contract with the UFZ. He/She will participate in the established Helmholtz Graduate School HIGRADE (http://www.ufz.de/index.php?en=11429). Salary will be according to the ap­pro­pri­ate civil service level 13 (65 %) TVöD. Working place is Leipzig.
