The research team headed by Prof. Jörg Menche at the Department of Structural and Computer Biology is recruiting 1 PhD student.
The Department is part of the Max Perutz Labs, a university research institute of the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna. At its Campus Vienna Biocenter in Vienna's 3rd district, over 450 scientists from more than 30 nations work in 60 research groups in basic research in molecular life sciences.
The candidate should have a Master degree in the natural sciences, preferably mathematics, physics, bioinformatics or related areas. Knowledge in the fundamentals of statistics, machine learning and biological data analysis is an advantage. It is also required that the candidate has knowledge of molecular biology in order to understand complex experimental designs in model and non-model organisms. The candidates will participate in research, teaching to the extent of the collective agreement provisions and administration - contribute to research projects / scientific studies - and contribute to publications / scientific articles.
The candidate is expected to analyse large and diverse biological data using advanced statistical and mathematical concepts. The ideal candidate has a strong mathematical background, good knowledge of molecular biology and experience in programming. Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement - Supervision of students - Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums - Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration
Good knowledge of statistics and mathematical modelling of multivariate data is a must. It is further required that the candidate has the necessary knowledge of molecular biology and biochemistry to understand complex experimental designs in model and non-model organisms.
