Was Sie erwarten könnenSpray guns, such as HVLP-, airless and pneumatic guns are widely used in automated painting processes. Until now numerical studies on spray painting processes using spray guns have been focused mainly on the simulation of two phase flow (air and liquid droplets), the deposition of droplets, and the prediction of paint film thickness on substrates. The droplet size distributions used in the simulation were obtained through size distribution measurements by PDA or Malvern. The atomization of paint liquid plays an important role for the paint quality on substrates. However, there is few numerical study of breakup process.
Currently there is an ongoing AIF-Project about numerical study of disintegration of paint liquids by using atomizers in spray painting processes. Within the scope of these activities a Master/Bachelor thesis will be given. The primary goal is to carry out breakup simulation using a commercial airless spray gun. The CFD program ANSYS-Fluent will be used in the investigations. A new method, the so-called VOF-DPM for free-surface flows and discrete phase (particle phase), is applied. Simulations will be carried out in the High Performance Computer Center in Stuttgart (HLRS).
The work will be focused on:
- Creating a computational domain with high-quality hexahedral cells for breakup simulation. Examination of mesh independence should be carried out.
- Carry out primary breakup simulation using one or two set of operating condition, such as liquid flow rate.
- Newtonian Viscosity Modell will be used.
- Analysis of liquid-gas interface structures, namely primary breakup pattern, such as liquid ligaments close the gun, equivalent droplet diameter, droplet velocity, etc.
- Comparing the droplet size distribution with measurement.
