The Fraunhofer Research Center for Assistive Information and Communication Solutions is working
with approximately 60 FTEs (team of 80-100 persons) on ICT solutions to extend the reach of knowledge
society and to provide barrier-free access to leading edge digital technologies. Main topics are technologies
like Internet of Things, Big Data, UX, Sensor Fusion and similar scientific issues destinated to
be applied to new market domains.
Current projects are related to personal health, healthy nutrition, precision agriculture, precision retail,
work ergonomics, indoor localization with specific user groups like, e.g., aging and elderly persons or
people living in developing countries. The majority of projects aims at supporting industrial clients with
applied scientific activities in order to foster the development of innovative products.
The Director is specifically responsible for the long term scientific and economic strategy of the center
and does have budget and personnel responsibilities. At the same time, like in all Fraunhofer research
facilities, a close cooperation with the local university (Porto) ensures access to additional scientific
excellence and young researchers. Thus, it is intended that the Director will also become an invited
full time professor at the Faculty of Engineering of U. Porto (FEUP) upon positive evaluation of a joint
panel. As an invited full time professor, 6 hours lecturing time per week and research supervision roles
at FEUP, according to U. Porto and Portuguese regulations, are required. He/she is also expected
to assume the leadership or co-leadership of project research activities at FEUP in cooperation with
Fraunhofer AICOS, other Fraunhofer Institutes and/or other organizations.
The successful working model of Fraunhofer is characterized by a balanced mix of research activities
contributing with different aspects. On the one hand, strategic research is enabled by internal funding
in order to prepare future topics. Cooperative contract research is, on the other hand, being realized
with scientific and industrial partners under the umbrella of national and international R&D programs
to exchange knowledge with the best. At the core of the Fraunhofer model is contract research for
industrial partners. The scientific outcome of bilateral R&D projects is incorporated into excellent product
innovations for industrial clients.
Fraunhofer is looking for a personality with international experience and an excellent scientific background
referring to the topics mentioned above. APhD from a renowned university in an ICT-related
domain is mandatory. As a leader, the Director enjoys applying scientific knowledge to real world
problems in order to create added-value for the clients of the research center. The candidate has been
managing scientific groups in the past and ideally has already gained experience in the industry or a
Being the key representative of the research center, the candidate is both able to easily communicate
with clients and non-scientific stakeholders as well as with the corporate team. He/she is capable to
intelligibly communicate complex scientific topics and to convey enthusiasm. Engineering spirit and
hands-on experience complement the candidate‘s profile. Ideally, the candidate brings sound experience
with this type of research environment from Fraunhofer or similar international research organizations.
The working language is English. Knowledge of Portuguese and German languages is of advantage.
The remuneration is composed of a base salary related to the Portuguese scientific system and
additional fixed and flexible components from Fraunhofer‘s side.
The starting date is February 1st, 2017. International applicants will receive a support for moving to
Portugal. IRS tax benefits might apply for international candidates as well.
