of Cologne invites applications for the position of a
Doctoral Researcher/PhD Student (m/f)
PhD student in Information Systems with a weekly working time of 29,88 hours (75 % position).
The initial contract is for 4 years. We offer a total number of three contracts. The positions
can be occupied with a certain delay (i.e., e.g., March/August/September 2018). The salary is
according to public pay group based on the German E13 TV-L scale if terms and conditions
under collective bargaining law are fulfilled.
With the exponential growth of data available from different market channels, firms have the
opportunity to exploit data for their competitive advantage. The volume and variety of data
have far outstripped the capacity of manual analysis. Meanwhile, computers have become
far more powerful, networking is ubiquitous, and algorithms have been developed that can
connect datasets to enable broader and deeper analyses than previously possible. This project
aims to understand decision-making that enhances sustainability in complex market environments
and develop policy implications to promote sustainability. The main application area of this PhD
project is in the smart energy grid, such as energy cooperatives and markets, and mobility
domain, such as electric and autonomous vehicles.
The position involves the development and completion of a PhD project related to Information
Systems and Smart Energy Markets (big data analytics, machine learning), as well as participation
in teaching (3 hours per week presence in the classroom or grading, plus pre- and post work)
and research activities. The doctoral research fellow will be integrated into research surrounding
information systems and existing research groups at the Institute of Energy Economics at the

The successful applicant is expected to hold an excellent Masters degree in information systems,
computer science, business management, economics or an affiliated field, have profound
knowledge in quantitative research methods, and excellent English skills. GRE/GMAT and TOEFL
scores are considered in the evaluation. Profound knowledge in data analytics and data mining
techniques as well as programming skills in relevant programming languages (such as Java
and Python) are explicitly desirable.
