At Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), the following position is to be filled, starting in the summer term 2023.
Junior Professorship (W1) with Tenure Track to Full Professorship (W3)
in the field of
Ethics in Technology
Ref. No. P2208
New technologies, despite their potential benefits, usually raise a myriad of concerns and ethical questions. Autonomous vehicles, for example, use algorithms to respond to potential accidents. The development of technologies, especially those related to artificial intelligence and digitalisation, must keep the ethical, legal and societal dimensions in mind. Against this background, it is crucial to develop and promote the relevant skills and knowledge that will enable engineering students and researchers to comprehensively understand and analyse the ethical dimensions of technology development and its governance.
With this Junior Professorship the TUHH aims to strengthen research and teaching in the domain of ethics and its applications in technology. The post-holder will support TUHH research and teaching at the interface of philosophy and technology. Relevant areas of research include, but are not restricted to, the following topics related to ethics in technology and engineering:
- Ethics in automation, autonomy, artificial intelligence, big data and information technology
- Ethics in design and development of safety and security systems technologies
- Ethics in logistics and supply chains
- Privacy and security information management
- Ethics in biological and medical technologies
- Climate change and social-ecological transformations
Applicants should preferably have an experienced background at the intersection of philosophy and technology. Based on this interdisciplinary background, the successful applicant will initiate and conduct novel collaborative research with other TUHH institutes and external research institutions.
The candidate is expected to be actively involved in teaching basic and advanced courses in different degree programs of TUHH, particularly in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, and computer science. The ability to teach in German is an advantage. The candidate should be willing to raise third-party funds.
This Junior Professorship is financed by the Joint Federal Government-Länder Tenure-Track Programme.
The appointment is initially limited to three years, with the possibility of an extension for a further three years after a positive interim evaluation. In the event of a positive final evaluation, the position will be converted into a permanent W3 professorship.
The Hamburg University of Technology is an equal opportunity employer and particularly welcomes and encourages applications from women. Woman are underrepresented among professors at the TUHH. They will therefore be given preferential consideration in the event of equivalent qualifications. Applications by disabled persons with equal qualifications will be given preference.
