Assessment of long-term storage effects on materials (TEC-QEE (3))

The Materials’ Physics & Chemistry Section (TEC-QEE) is operating state of the art space simulation facilities (vacuum,
temperature, EM & particle radiation.) as well as physical & chemical materials’ characterisation instrumentation within the Materials & EEE
components laboratory. It is providing engineering support to all ESA projects and development programmes in the area of Materials' Physics
and Chemistry, associated processes and environmental effects. Our main activities are:
Physical Analysis and characterisation of materials (phase transitions, thermo-mechanical, thermo-optical and thermal analysis, BDS, ESR, XRD, surface analyses like SEM/EDX/WDX techniques, XPS & AFM, CT and other NDI/NDE techniques...)
Chemical Analysis and characterisation of materials (All types of spectroscopy like UV-VIS-NIR, GCMS, NMR, FTIR, Raman, thermal analysis, surface analysis like XPS, EDX, WDX, contact angle, ...)
Cleanliness & Contamination Control including laboratory work focused on contamination monitoring, materials outgassing characterisation, evaluation of contamination impacts on performances, surface analysis
environmental evaluation (ground/space effects) including laboratory testing work and support of NCRs and RFAs. This includes the evaluation of degradation effects due to (long term) storage and corrosion, biodegradation, entry and re-entry assessment of physical/chemical processes and other processes.
performance prediction and verification (incl. in-orbit & post flight analysis) of materials and associated processes
advise on the selection and validation of materials, such as polymers, ceramics, optical materials, composites, and their associated processes, such as curing, bonding, coatings, etc.
Long-term storage is a challenge for forthcoming ESA missions like MTG and METOP SG due to planned storage times of already more than 15 years.
The effects of such extended storage periods on the performance of the materials and processes used is not easy to predict and requires an advanced
understanding of environmental effects on materials. The aim of the activity is to rely on advanced material characterisation techniques (DDS, DMA,
TMA, DSC) as well as advanced microscopic techniques (Optical, AFMs, nano-TA, SEM) and chemical analysis (FTIR, RAMAN) to derive an understanding of
the intrinsic mechanisms that lead to environmental effects and degrade the functional properties of materials. It shall focus on all materials
classes and shall work further on a recently finished industrial storage activities over the last two years.
The following activities are foreseen:
definition of test programme in relation to extended storage periods of spacecraft
definition of analysis programme based on the above techniques
execution of test programme and analysis programme
understanding of degradation mechanisms
model description of degradation mechanisms
background in Materials Science, Chemistry or Applied Physics
demonstrated interest to experimental work is required, background in thermal analysis is an asset
German citizenship is absolutely necessary
applicants should have just completed (conclusion not older than two years) or be in their final year of a university course at Master's level in a technical or scientific discipline
candidates must be fluent in English or French, the official languages of the Agency
