Open Rank Professorship
Additive Manufacturing for Medical
The Swiss Institute for Translational and Entrepreneurial Medicine SITEM is
a recently founded medical and bio-technology translation accelerator.
It brings together Switzerland‘s largest tertiary, clinical hospital centre and
the research capabilities of the multi-faculty University of Bern and other
Swiss national research institutions. The Swiss federal and local cantonal
governments have ear-marked 50 M CHF towards the establishment of this
translation oriented project. SITEM will be housed in a newly-built facility,
with full-service bioengineering resources, including a comprehensive
1 M CHF Additive Manufacturing laboratory for dedicated medical
applications. An open rank Professorship will be established for an
individual that strives to increase the profile and effectiveness of the
ongoing biomedical engineering research efforts at the University of Bern
through the addition of Additive Manufacturing for medical applications
Candidates are expected to hold a doctorate in biomedical or mechanical
engineering, material sciences or related technology specialty and have an
established research track record in Additive Manufacturing and 3D
printing methods using metallic, plastic, ceramic or composite materials for
medical applications and/or using biological materials for tissue engineering
scaffolds. The post-holder will be expected to establish and run an
internationally competitive research group, which will be embedded into
the medical faculty of the University of Bern. The aim is to build an
integrated, multidisciplinary research capability that links with the clinical
specialty departments at the University Hospital of Bern Inselspital, liaise
with ongoing biomedical engineering research efforts at the University of
Bern and other relevant national and international research institutions.
Collaborations with industry partners with a view to translate novel medical
applications, products or services into clinical care and the healthcare
market place must be an important research objective for the leadership of
the respective group.
There is an expectation of a strong commitment to high-quality graduate
student teaching and mentoring. Teaching by the postholder will be
delivered in the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences of
the University of Bern and will confer relevant modules of the specialist
Masters programme in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Bern.
Candidates should demonstrate success in the acquisition of significant
third party research funding and/or industry-funded commercial research
collaborations. Knowledge of project development and funding strategies
for translational research and biomedical product development are a
prerequisite, as are an entrepreneurial and innovation-driven outlook.
Operational experience in budgeting and administration matters in the
context of a mid-size academic research group is essential.
To ensure translational impact of the SITEM research programme through the
input from the post-holder, a solid understanding of technology transfer to
clinical adoption and industry application is important. Experience in medical
technology clinical trials and the evaluation of novel technology for
industry-readiness would be desirable. Collaboration with research groups of
the Bern Biomedical Engineering Network (www.bbme.ch) as well as with
other academic institutions, nationally and internationally will be integral to
the priorities of the AM for medical technology group.
For enquiries about the vacancy, please contact the chair of the selection
panel Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Weber by e-mail on email@example.com.
The University of Bern and SITEM is committed to promoting women‘s
careers in STEMM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics
and medicine) in research and higher education. To that end applications
from women are particularly welcome for this post. Appointment will always
be made on merit.
To be considered for the position, please submit your application* before
March 10th 2017 in electronic format to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
