Universität Freiburg Excellence Cluster livMatS
Consider making the switch to the University of Freiburg: It is one of the most renowned and strongest research universities in Germany, with a history spanning more than 500 years. You'll engage in top-notch research and teaching with a unique spectrum of disciplines, perspectives, and people - right in the heart of one of Germany's most beautiful cities.
The University of Freiburg's human resources policy is oriented toward the principles of equal opportunity and diversity. The university is committed to the goal of creating a family-friendly university.
The Excellence Cluster livMatS welcomes applications for a
PhD position: NANOTRET: Nano-micro-structured permanently charged surfaces for electret nanogenerators
Part-time position (65 %), Start-date: At the earliest possible date.
The Cluster of Excellence
livMatS develops completely novel, bioinspired materials systems that adapt autonomously to various environments and harvest clean energy from their surroundings. The intention of these purely technical – yet in a behavioral sense quasi-living – materials systems is to meet the demands of humans with regard to pioneering environmental and energy technologies. The societal relevance of autonomous systems and their sustainability will thus play an important role in their development. The research program of
livMatS is characterized by highly interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers from a broad range of fields including engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, psychology, the humanities, and sustainability sciences.
For the project NANOTRET
livMatS seeks for a highly motivated PhD candidate for the development of electret nanogenerators based on nano- and micro-structured permanently charged surfaces. The aim of the project is (i) to develop nano- and micro-structured surfaces with permanently imprinted charges based on specially designed core@shell nanoparticles, (ii) fundamental characterization of these surfaces in terms of morphology, charge distribution and remanence and (iii) fabrication of electret nanogenerators. After surface optimization in terms of nano- and micro-structure regarding maximization of charge density, charge remanence and output power, the best surface designs will be transferred into mechanically compliant electret micro harvesters, which are designed on the basis of theoretic modeling and simulation. The developed nano- and microstructured surfaces will also be explored for their triboelectric properties in cooperation with the project
For this project interdisciplinary competences ranging from nano- and microfabrication techniques, materials chemistry and materials sciences to mechanical and electrical engineering are highly desirable. The potential PhD candidates are therefore expected to have a master with outstanding grades in one of the following fields (nanoscience, chemical engineering, material science, micro system engineering, functional materials) and the strong willingness and provable competence to work interdisciplinary. Previous experience in one of the following areas (surface structuring, atomic layer deposition, electret nanogenerators and/or atomic force microscopy) is appreciated. In addition, strong competences in scientific presentations and writing (in English language) as well as well as team skills are expected from the successful PhD candidate as he/she will be part of a creative, productive, interdisciplinary and dynamic international team of scientists.
