Code No. 2018/WP 1
The place of employment is Hamburg.
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow, near Berlin, conducts materials and coastal research. You can find more information at www.hzg.de.
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht operates an outstation at DESY in Hamburg in order to provide access to highly brilliant synchrotron radiation within its German Engineering Materials Science Center (GEMS). At the PETRA III synchrotron radiation source, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht jointly operates the High Energy Materials Science Beamline (HEMS, P07), the Imaging Beamline (IBL, P05) and the Nanofocus Endstation of Micro- and Nanofocus X-ray Scattering Beamline (MINAXS, P03) along with supporting lab spaces.
The Imaging Beamline P05 is optimized for micro- and nano-tomography techniques with a strong focus on materials science and life science applications and is actively used by members from the DFG funded Collaborative Research Centre project SFB 986 "Tailor-Made Multi-Scale Materials Systems-M³". Its unique beam characteristics promote novel applications of tomographic techniques, ultra-fast in-situ measurements as well as highest spatial and density resolution. Additionally, the highly coherent beam enables the application of phase contrast methods with a spatial resolution below 100 nm.
In this framework we are looking for a PostDoc (m/f) at P05 Nano-Tomography Endstation. The appointment is initially limited to 3 years and may be extended.
As a postdoctoral researcher at P05 Imaging Beamline, your major responsibilities will be:
further development of the existing nano-tomography experimental setup and continuous improvement of our image processing concepts
scientific & technical advancement, i.e. active acquisition of scientific collaborations within SFB 986, implementation of new sample environments according to the demand of the user community, exploration of new optical concepts for X-ray nanotomography
the pursuit of an own scientific project within the scope of Helmholtz program oriented funding or SFB 986
support of users (from within and outside of SFB 986) before, during and after their beam times at P05
AThe qualifications essential to fulfill these duties are:
PhD in physics or in a related discipline
working knowledge of image processing
programming skills in a high level computer language
hands-on experience with experimental instrumentation
excellent oral and written English skills
Skills and knowledge considered as assets:
experience with phase contrast or coherent imaging
working experience at a synchrotron radiation beamline
multinational work environment with over 900 colleagues from more than 50 nations
extensive options of vocational training (i. a. expert seminars, language courses or leadership seminars)
flexible working hours and various models to ensure the compatibility of family and career
excellent infrastructure, including a scientific in-house library as well as modern work spaces
remuneration according to the standards of the collective wage agreement TV-AVH including further social benefits
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is an equal opportunity employer and particularly strives to increase the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.
