As part of its research commitment to the field of Intellectual Property Law and with the support of the ‘Special Research Fund‘ (Bijzonder
Onderzoeksfonds, BOFZAP), established by the Flemish Government, the Faculty of Law of the Humanities and Social Sciences Group at
KU Leuven announces an open position for a fulltime academic staff member within the KU Leuven Centre for IT and IP law (CiTiP).
CiTiP is part of the Faculty of Law. It has a mission to develop research and education in the field of Intellectual Property and
Information Technology-law. Research in Leuven in this field draws upon an experience of more than 30 years of scientific activity that
is recognised at both a national and an international level. At present, CiTiP consists of a group of more than 40 researchers, including
4 professors specialised in the legal and ethical aspects of IP-Law, IT-Law and Media Law. The institute has an extensive national and
international network, both in academia and in the fields of practice and policy development. CiTiP offers a solid research
infrastructure, connections with European and other public bodies and non-profit organisations, a stable intake of highly talented PhD
students, and a supportive work environment.
As research professor you will develop a broad internationally oriented research programme with a focus on intellectual property or
certain areas in this field. You must be capable of acquiring competitive funding and you will supervise PhD students.
During the first 10 years of the appointment, you will be expected to participate in limited teaching on the Master of Law and
Specialised Master in intellectual property and ICT-law programmes as stipulated in the BOF Decree.
KU Leuven expects its academic staff to contribute to institutional management and to engage in societal outreach initiatives.
The candidate should hold a PhD in Law, showing clear expertise in the field of intellectual property. He/she must have acquired profound
knowledge of intellectual property after completion of their PhD. The candidate should be able to demonstrate ample
experience in researching complex problems and future challenges of intellectual property law, in particular taking into account technological
innovations (such as AI, blockchain, IoT, …).
At the start of the mandate the candidate must have at least 3 full years of experience in scientific research counting from the day of
their PhD defense. The board of the BOFZAP advisory committee may authorise exceptions on the basis of extraordinary potential and
The candidate is expected to have an excellent research record, evidenced by publications in international peer-reviewed journals, by
research projects and (in case of a longer professional career) by the successful supervision of PhD students. He/she should have a
highquality international research network. The publications and/or other research results should demonstrate originality, an in-depth
level of abstraction and openness to intra- or interdisciplinary research.
The candidate should possess excellent teaching skills, enabling him/her to contribute to the high quality of his/her research unit and
the educational programmes to which he/she will contribute.
The candidate should have the necessary skills to teach students from various disciplines in order to allow them to acquire legal
knowledge and skills. Experience in academic teaching, with demonstrated didactical skills, is considered as a plus. Candidates with
evaluation results of prior educational experience are invited to submit these in their file.
The candidate should have the necessary social and professional skills to work and cooperate in a flexible way in CiTiP, and in the
Faculty of Law.
Proficiency in English is required. The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If the candidate does not speak
Dutch (or does not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable him/her to take part in
administrative meetings. Prior to teaching Dutch and/or English courses, the candidate will be given the opportunity to acquire or improve
necessary language skills. Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to acquire or improve
their language skills, if necessary.
The Humanities and Social Sciences Group has decided to encourage and strengthen the (inter)disciplinary research in intellectual
property law by recruiting a research professor in that specific domain.
Your assignment includes tasks of research, education and service provision, but during the period of the BOF status will mainly
consist of research in (sub-domains of) intellectual property law.
