Logo
The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) is a member of the Leibniz Association and addresses crucial scientific questions in the fields of global change, climate impacts, and sustainable development. Researchers from the natural and social sciences work together to generate interdisciplinary insights and to provide society with sound information for decision-making.
We offer a

PostDoc Position (50% working time)

for coordinating and synthesizing climate impacts on permafrost and data post-processing for climate services.
The position is within the project ISIPedia, the open inter-sectoral impacts encyclopedia, which aims to become a key point of reference for accessing consistent, multi-sector, politically-relevant and user-driven climate-impact simulations. Users of the online platform should gain access to relevant output-data sets and analysis of the underlying impact model simulations, as well as written and visual syntheses of regionally-resolved climate-impact projections.
ISIpedia is a joint project within the framework of the European Research Area for Climate Services (ERA4CS) with partners in 6 countries and is coordinated by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). The BMBF funds the German contribution to the project.
One (preferably) postdoctoral scientist position for the coordination of permafrost modelling activities (50% E13 TV-L, planned till 17.09.2020).
Applicant
The applicant should be experienced in climate change impact analysis and permafrost modelling. A university degree in geo-ecology, geo-informatics, system analysis, hydrology, or other relevant discipline is required. Knowledge about global change, its potential impacts on nature and society and adaptation options would be desirable. (S)He should also have knowledge and insights into mathematical modelling. Programming skills (Fortran, C, R) and experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are of utmost importance to perform the tasks. Experience with the NetCDF file format would be welcomed. A good command of written and spoken English is mandatory.
The task of the applicant is to engage global permafrost modelling groups in a multi-disciplinary project, and to coordinate modelling activities according to a common simulation protocol. The task will also include the organisation of a permafrost impacts workshop to synthesize climate impacts on permafrost and to analyse its consequences for society. The candidate is expected to collaborate within the ISIpedia project to work on permafrost impact metrics, coordinate them with other sectorial activities and jointly discuss how they can be communicated to respective end users. The applicant is expected to contribute to scientific publications within the project as well as to collate climate impacts on permafrost for the ISIpedia knowledge base. Pursuing own research related to permafrost modelling and process analysis, is desired.
The successful candidate will be based at PIK, in the "ECOSTAB" Flagship Activity of the Research Domain 1 "Earth System Analysis".
Conditions
The position will be funded until mid of September, 2020 with a salary according to the German public tariff scheme (TV-L E13, 50%). The envisaged starting date for the position is 15. January 2018.
Application
Application documents should comprise a letter of motivation including a description of relevant experience, and a CV with the contact details of two referees.
The review of applications will start immediately.
Please send your complete documents preferably as a single PDF document by email to: Kirsten.Thonicke@pik-potsdam.de using the reference number ISIpedia_KTh. Closing date is 08. November 2017!
PIK seeks to increase the number of women in areas where they are
underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
Application of disabled applicants of equal scientific qualifications will
be favourably regarded. PIK encourages applications by parents returning
from parental leave.
