Postdoctoral Position (f/m/d) Department Aerosol Analysis & Microscopy Group of the Multiphase Chemistry
The Aerosol Analysis & Microscopy Group of the Multiphase Chemistry Department at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry
in Mainz invites applications for a
within the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO) Project (https://www.attoproject.org/).
The Amazon rainforest is a unique ecosystem with a tremendous wealth of biodiversity and that provides a stabilizing role in the Earth climate system. However, the Amazon experiences the combined pressures from man-made deforestation and progressing climate change, causing potentially severe perturbations of the ecosystem's integrity and stability. To intensify research on critical aspects of the Amazonian biosphere-atmosphere exchange, the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory has been established in the central Amazon Basin as a long-term research site.
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to support our team with the challenging and exciting operation of the aerosol measurements at the ATTO site as well as the analysis and publication of the unique measurement data. The successful candidate will be part of an international team conducting and analysing the long-term observations as well as in-depth process
studies of atmospheric aerosols and their links to rainforest ecology, cloud microphysics and hydrological cycling in the Amazon. Main working location will be Mainz, Germany, with frequent participation in field trips to the Amazon.
Responsibility for the continuous operation and quality management of a broad set of aerosol and complementary atmospheric
measurements at ATTO (e.g. aerosol sizing, optical properties, chemical composition, mixing state, aerosol fluxes, etc.)
Regular visits at the ATTO site for measurement campaigns as well as instrument installations and maintenance
Analysis and publication of the resulting observations
Occasional scientific support within other field campaigns worldwide (aircraft, research vessel, etc.)
Qualifications & requirements:
A PhD in atmospheric science, physics, meteorology or a related scientific discipline
Solid experience in aerosol measurement techniques and data analysis
High motivation to participate in field campaigns in the Amazon to work in an interdisciplinary and international research environment
Experience and affinity to scientific computer programming in the context of atmospheric data analysis (e.g. R, Igor, Python, Matlab etc.)
Excellent verbal and written communication and writing skills, demonstrated by scientific publications and presentations. Fluent English is mandatory. German and/or Portuguese ability is desirable, but not required
Ability to effectively and thoroughly perform independent research
Team orientation, passion for science, and creativity
The position is limited to 2 years. Payment and benefits will be according to the German TVöD pay scale (EG 13). A first evaluation of applications is scheduled for 31 July 2019.
The search will be continued until the position is filled.
