Professor in Energy System Analysis
The Energy Economics and System Analysis section (EESY), placed in the Sustainability Division at DTU Management, invites applications for a position as a Professor in ‘Energy System Analysis’. The section provides tools and expertise, supporting national and international policymaking in the green transition of energy systems. The section offers an excellent research environment with international staff, postdocs, and PhD students.
The overall research question of the Section is how energy systems can be decarbonized, and how to design and operate systems and markets with large amounts of variable renewable energy. The Section performs energy system analyses integrating all energy carriers and sectors that, at the same time, enable cost-efficient integration of low-carbon technologies in the energy system. This provides decision support for diverse stakeholders from both policymaking and industry in the context of the energy transition.
Hereby, the research addresses some of the main challenges for supporting the green energy transition, for example considering the stochastic supply from renewable technologies, the increasing need for flexibility in the energy system, and how regulation can support the green transition of energy systems. The Section combines competences within systems analyses, market design, regulation, econometrics, operations management, and energy technology assessment.
Responsibilities and qualifications
The key responsibilities of the new professor are:
- Research leadership in order to strengthen and develop the profile and international visibility of the department
- Guidance and supervision of early career researchers
- External collaboration with academia, industry, and public agencies
- Teaching and supervision at undergraduate and graduate level
- Attracting grants and securing external funding for collaborating projects
Moreover, the new professor is expected to become a scientific leader and driving force in the Section for the further development of energy systems analysis with a focus on one or more of the following research areas:
- Smart energy systems
- Sectoral integration (power, heat, gas, and transport) and Power-to-X
- Integration of renewable energy sources (both variable and biomass-based) and flexibility options
- Green fuels and their electricity demand
- Economics of energy systems
This position requires strong experience with interdisciplinary academic work along with technical and training skills to strengthen DTU’s research in energy system analysis, technologies, and large-scale systems. You will therefore bring the following:
- A high international level of original scientific production that has contributed to the further development of the subject area in question.
- Expertise in developing operational, quantitative methods, and tools within your core research field(s)
- Dedication to working with complex topics using a system perspective
- A strong background in energy system or economic modelling
- Documented experience in attracting research funding and project management
- Dedication to and efficiency in teaching and supervision at various levels, including PhD level
- Collaboration with industry and/or public authorities
You are expected to take a lead role in teaching at the BEng, BSc, MSc, and PhD levels. You will be expected to learn Danish and be able to teach in Danish after 3 years. DTU can provide Danish language courses.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The salary for the position will be determined by the applicants qualifications and in agreement with the relevant union.
