in Mitochondrial signalling in pulmonary
vascular and airway diseases
as of now
The position is to be filled at the JLU's site of the Excellence Cluster CPI, a joint
institute of the JLU, the Goethe-University Frankfurt and the Max-Planck-Institute for
Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim. The position is offered for a period of six
years pursuant to § 64 Para. 1 and 4 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG) and to
conditions of employment based on § 62 HHG. In the case of successful completion
of the six-year W2 position, which is to be assessed in an evaluation procedure
pursuant to § 64 Para. 2 HHG, the appointment will be converted into a permanent
We invite applications of highly motivated candidates with excellent scientific track
records and a successful history of funding acquisition to build up a multidisciplinary
research team for fundamental and translational research on mitochondrial function
and dysfunction in pulmonary vascular and airway diseases (e.g. hypoxic signaling,
pulmonary hypertension, COPD). In addition to being integral part of the CPI, the
professorship is expected to cooperate with the “German Center for Lung Research“
(headquartered in Giessen), the Collaborative Research Center “Pulmonary
Hypertension and Cor pulmonale” (SFB 1213), the emerging ”Institute for Lung
Health (ILH)” and further national and international research consortia embedded in
the research priority fields of the Faculty of Medicine in Giessen (Cardiopulmonary
System, Infection, Inflammation and Immunity, Oncology, Reproduction, Repair and
Regeneration). A state-of-the-art research concept should enable efficient target
identification/validation and drug evaluation for novel treatment strategies of lung
vascular and airway diseases. Areas of responsibility also include application for and
coordination of externally funded projects as well as teaching duties in experimental
pneumology, molecular medicine and (patho-)physiology of lung diseases.
The successful candidate should have an internationally recognized record of
accomplishment, preferably in the field of pulmonary mitochondriology, a bench-tobedside
experience in pulmonary vascular and airway diseases, a successful history
of funding acquisition, a vision for an innovative research program and a strong
motivation to interact with research groups in basic, translational and clinical lung
Additional prerequisites are strong leadership and coordination skills and a firm
commitment to undergraduate and graduate student education within the Giessen
Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL).
The applicant is expected to have experience in international collaborations and to
support international networking.
