The University of Bremen in Department 1 (Physics / Electrical Engineering), Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) offers for the summer semester 2021 - subject to job approval - one
Professorship (f/m/d)
Salary class W3
in the field
Remote Sensing of the Atmosphere
Code number P580/20
If the general requirements under civil service law are met, civil servant status is granted for life. The professorship is intended to represent experimental atmospheric physics with a focus on remote sensing in faculty 1, Physics, in research and teaching. Applicants should be recognized for their outstanding international performance.
The IUP is internationally well recognized for its research in remote sensing of the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere with quantitative methods determining natural and anthropogenic influences on the atmosphere and climate.
The research part of the professorship should focus on investigations of the composition of the atmosphere, especially with regard to the distribution of trace gases, using physical methods. This includes, in particular, satellite-based spectroscopic remote sensing as well as the development of new instruments and retrieval methods. We are looking for a scientifically excellent personality who integrates the broad expertise available in the institute into remote sensing and enhances it innovatively. Experience in initiating and carrying out large international research collaborations (satellite missions, measurement campaigns, etc.) is important.
It is expected that existing international, national and local cooperation of the IUP will be continued and expanded, e.g. through active participation in collaborative Research initiatives and future satellite missions.
The integration of satellite-based remote sensing in the focus area Space Research of the Science Plan 2025 of the State of Bremen enables broad opportunities for cooperation within and outside the University of Bremen.
Participation in teaching in the courses in physics, Master in Environmental Physics, and / or Master of Space Science and Technologies, also in basic courses, is required. Experience with media-based forms of teaching and the willingness to consider the gender perspective in research and teaching are desirable. We expect active commitment to the development of existing and the establishment of new international courses.
The prerequisites for a position are a university degree (degree in physics, meteorology, or related fields), a relevant excellent PhD, as well as other outstanding scientific achievements in the field of remote sensing of the earth's atmosphere, proven by a habilitation or equivalent achievements, that can also have been achieved outside the university. In addition, evidence of top-class international publications as well as the successful acquisition of third-party funding are expected. The preferred candidate is expected to have significant experience leading research teams and related management skills. Pedagogical suitability, teaching experience at a university and the ability to teach in German and English are required. The willingness to take part in higher education didactic training is expected.
The University of Bremen offers a range of measures to support new hires. This includes advice from the Welcome Center, childcare facilities, dual career assistance and opportunities for professional development, including language classes.
The University of Bremen aims to increase the proportion of women in science. The university has received multiple awards for its gender equality policy and is certified as a family-friendly university. Women are therefore explicitly asked to apply. International applications and applications from candidates with a migration background are expressly welcomed. Handicapped applicants with essentially the same professional and personal suitability will be given priority.
Appointments are made on the basis of paragraph 18 BremHG and paragraph 116 BremBG.
Applications with the customary documents as well as certificates and concepts for research and teaching within the scope of the professorship must be submitted by
February 4th, 2021, specifying the
reference number P580/20 to
