The Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V. (IASS) is an international, interdisciplinary center of excellence located in Potsdam, Germany.

Impacts of digitalization on global value and supply chains

The successful applicant will contribute to the project "Digitalisation and Impacts on Sustainability" working closely with the project
leader Dr. Grischa Beier under the guidance of scientific director Prof. Dr. Ortwin Renn.
Digital technologies are ubiquitous throughout the economy and in everyday life and have spread into almost every corner of the world. The challenges
and opportunities of this development are the main research subject of this project, concentrating in particular on issues related to the interlinkages
between economy and industry, resources and international cooperation and how they are affected by digital transformation processes. The offered position
will strengthen the IASS research on the impacts of digitalization on countries of the Global South. In particular, it contributes to developing a better
understanding of how global value and supply chains could be altered by digitalization and how these changes might affect countries in the Global South.
This includes identifying and analyzing potential impacts on employment, economic and industrial development as well as natural resources and the environment
of countries in the Global South. Furthermore, the position shall contribute to developing options for reacting to and coping with these changes under
the premise of socially, ecologically and economically sustainable development.
Development of a conceptual framework and a research methodology to critically reflect on the implications of digitalization on global value chains, taking in particular its socio-economic as well as ecological effects on countries of the Global South into account
Development and implementation of a case study (e.g. focusing or one sector or global supply chain) using the conceptual framework and methodology
Conceptualization and organization of national and international workshops (e.g. scenario building workshops, world cafés, etc.), seminars, and dialogues at the science-policy interface, and the participation in such events as one of the representatives of the IASS
Writing and contributing to publications in different formats (e.g. peer-reviewed publications, policy briefs, project website, social media, etc.)
Collaboration with project partners at the national, European and international level
Master's degrees or equivalent in economics/business studies, political science (preferably development theory, global economic policy), or in another closely related social or economic sciences
Proficiency in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods, value and supply chain analysis and/or econometric modelling
Experience with participatory methods and tools like scenario-building, horizon scanning, trend analysis ,etc. is an advantage as is the familiarity with transdisciplinary research designs
Background in regional studies (in particular focusing on Africa, Arab countries or Asia) as well as relevant working experience in these regions would be an asset
Excellent spoken and written communication skills in English are required. Knowledge in German as well as in French, Spanish or other official UN languages is an advantage
Ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary team
A high degree of creativity and personal initiative
Competency in MS Office required

The position is a full-time position (100%) available from 10/2018. Combining this position with a concurrent Ph.D. in a closely-related area is possible. The position is initially foreseen until 31 December 2020 (in dependence of a grant commitment). The place of work is Potsdam, Germany.
