Full-time Post-Doc positions available for four years from January 1st 2019 at of Stuttgart, with office at the Indo-German Centre for Sustainability, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, in Chennai, India


Our Background

In 2010, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) and several German universities jointly established the Indo-German Centre for Sustainability (IGCS), located on the IITM campus in Chennai, as a platform for international academic exchange and interdisciplinary research collaboration on major sustainable development issues. In Germany, the IGCS activities are supported by the ‘TU9‘ group of Technical Universities (led by RWTH Aachen University) and Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel. Focus areas of sustainability education and research relate to water (Kiel Univ.), waste (Univ. Stuttgart), land use and rural/ urban development (RWTH Aachen Univ.), as well as energy (TU Berlin).

The IGCS is part of the initiative "A New Passage to India" by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and receives funding from the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) via DAAD and from the Dept. of Science and Technology, Government of India. Since its inception, the IGCS offers short-term Winter / Summer Schools on various sustainability topics, workshop participations, as well as short- and long-term research stays to students and researchers both from India and Germany at IGCS Chennai or the German partner universities. German and IITM academic staff closely collaborate both in teaching and researching.

At University of Stuttgart, the Post-doc will be employed at the Institute for Sanitary Engineering, Water Quality and Solid Waste Management, Chair of Waste Management. Here, especially waste management issues of sustainable development are taken up in connection with IGCS. Research topics are in the field of appropriate waste management (including industrial waste) in coastal areas regarding climate relevance and climate change including modelling of waste management systems, developing and implementing strategies to reduce avoidable food waste, implementation of composting systems in urban and peri-urban areas in Chennai Region, as well as management including collection and recycling of waste from electrical and electronical equipment and from plastic waste in cooperation with industry and municipalities. The methodologies are based on engineering and natural sciences.

Your Profile

We are looking for applicants who completed a PhD degree and offer a strong research track record in any of the above-mentioned field of sustainable research as well as experience in teaching her/his subject. You are expected to engage in interdisciplinary research and to design your own project ideas and focus areas in India. You are fluent in English and German and display solid intercultural communication skills. Work-abroad experience and knowledge of the region are highly appreciated.

Your Duties and Responsibilities

You are expected to engage in interdisciplinary research and to design your own project ideas and focus areas in India. You should conduct research projects relating to issues of solid waste management together with IGCS colleagues in different formats. You will be able to solicit research grants in Germany (e.g. DFG, BMBF, industry) and collaborate with IGCS-area coordinators in Indian research projects. Beyond research you will support different teaching formats of the IGCS and contribute to further IGCS activities. Furthermore, you will be a point of contact for exchange students and scientists who are planning their DAAD funded stay in Chennai.

Our Offer

The position is limited until December 31st, 2022 and is to be filled by January 1st, 2019. The position is subject to the DAAD grant approval. This is a full-time position and thus involves some travel activities. The salary is based on level EG 13 TV-L of the German public service salary scale (TV-L). You will be hired by University of Stuttgart. Up to 6 months per year you are required to spend at the IGCS office at IITM in Chennai.
