The University of Vienna (20 faculties and centres, 179 fields of study, approx. 10.000 members of staff, about 90.000 students) seeks to fill the position as soon as possible of a
Senior Scientist
at the Department of Evolutionary Biology
Reference number: 12516
Are you interested in animal evolution and do you have a strong background in using bioinformatics approaches in zoological research? The Department of Evolutionary Biology seeks to fill a permanent Senior Scientist position in Bioinformatics. You will join a highly dynamic and international team that tackles questions on animal evolution on multiple levels, from gene sequence to molecular and morphological phenotypes. You will support our scientific staff by participating in projects that require analytical support in bioinformatics and you will aid in designing experiments to optimize data capture. As a highly motivated and enthusiastic colleague, you will continuously contribute expert state-of-the-art bioinformatics knowledge to help us stay at the forefront of evolutionary research. The position will suit candidates with a strong interest in organismal evolution. He*She has experience in performing independent, comparative analyses of transcriptomic and genomic datasets and has a strong interest in contributing such data to evodevo and phylogenomic research projects. Applications should include an updated CV, list of publications, the contact details of three potential referees, and a concise letter of motivation (no more than 2 A4 pages) outlining major research interests and potential contributions to existing research in the Department.
The employment relationship is initially limited to 6 months with the option to extend into a permanent contract.
Duration of employment: 6 month/s
Extent of Employment: 40.0 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
Research at the Department involves numerous metazoan non-model species using a wide spectrum of morphological, molecular, and bioinformatics approaches such as genomics, transcriptomics, gene expression, and single cell RNA sequencing. The Senior Scientist in Bioinformatics will be integrated and participate in ongoing research and will contribute to developing novel projects together with the PIs of the Department. Thus, the successful candidate awaits a highly diverse research environment and direct involvement in a wide range of research projects in the areas of evolutionary developmental biology, (phylo)genomics, and molecular evolution. The new colleague will steadily contribute the adequate and recent state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools to the research portfolio of the Department. It is thus imperative that he*she is and remains well-versed in current, timely bioinformatics applications to solve questions on animal evolution. The job includes active participation in research, teaching, and administration. This involves:
• Contributing ideas and input for the development of research projects together with the PIs of the Department that require bioinformatics tools
• Contributing to publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals
• Presentation at international scientific conferences, meetings, and workshops
• Continuous professional development in state-of-the-art bioinformatics methods
• Acting as contact person and providing assistance for other members of the Department in the application of bioinformatics applications
• Developing bioinformatics pipelines for the analysis of large-scale transcriptomic, genomic, and proteomic datasets
• Ability to advise the PIs of the Department on the use of appropriate bioinformatics tools in their research
• Independent performance of gene sequence analyses including phylogenomics
• Providing assistance in sequence identification in single cell RNA seq analyses and probe synthesis
• Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
• Participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance.
Profile:
The successful applicant must hold a PhD in Biology, Bioinformatics, or a related discipline. He*She has postdocotoral research experience and a solid publication record documenting the use of bioinformatics approaches to solve biological questions, including analysis of large transcriptomic and genomic datasets. Applicants need to be able to work in larger teams and should have a strong interest in training new team members. Applicants must be able to prepare results of their analyses for presentations in regular group meetings that include members with little bioinformatics knowledge. Candidates must be fluent in English and will constantly and closely follow novel approaches and innovations in the field of Bioinformatics. Knowledge of the German language is an advantage.
