We offer a university senior scientist position on “convection-permitting regional numerical weather prediction (NWP)”. The position will be embedded in the new research group of Prof. Martin Weissmann on convective-scale NWP with particular focus on data assimilation and ensemble methods.
The starting date can be as early as 1 February 2020. The position is initially limited to an employment duration of 3 years with a transition to a permanent position possible through mutual agreement from both sides.
The Department of Meteorology and Geophysics has recently filled two professorship positions (Andreas Stohl and Martin Weissmann, both starting in the beginning of 2020) and is currently in the process of filling a third professorship. This will create an exciting international working environment for many new scientists, large potential for collaboration, and the opportunity for strong personal development.
We seek an outstanding candidate to work in the new research group of M. Weissmann that currently includes the following research topics:
- Assimilation of new observation types (e.g. cloud-affected satellite radiances, Aeolus satellite winds, radar reflectivity);
- Ensemble methods (e.g. ensemble sensitivity and diagnostics, error and covariance modelling)
- Convective-scale NWP for renewable energy production;
Candidates are requested to propose a research agenda that complements the research profile of the group and links to at least one of the topics mentioned above.
Besides research, you are expected to participate in teaching and the supervision of students. Financial support is available for attending international meetings and visiting international research partners in e.g. the U.S., Germany, Australia or Japan.
Participation in research, teaching and administration:
• Maintenance of modelling and data assimilation infrastructure of the group;
• Scientific and technical support of group members;
• Research that complements the activities of the group;
• Contributions to project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding;
• Scientific publications and presentations;
• Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement;
• Supervision of students;
• Full involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration.
• Doctoral / PhD degree in meteorology, physics or related subject;
• Good communication skills and ability to work in a team;
• Profound experience in programming;
• Profound experience in numerical modelling;
• Proven ability to publish in highly ranked international journals;
• Excellent command of written and spoken English.
Furthermore, the following skills/expertise will be an asset:
• Experience in external fundraising;
• Experience in teaching;
• Expertise in data assimilation;
• Knowledge of academic processes and structures.
