The Division of Microbial Ecology (DoME) at the Centre of Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science is a creative and ambitious team that conducts internationally leading research in the field of microbial ecology.
We are searching for a Senior Scientist with outstanding expertise in the field of microbiology / microbial ecology / biogeochemistry to support the Division in our various research experiments in microbial nitrogen cycling using stable isotope, single cell and cultivation techniques. The position is currently limited to 4 years, with the possibility of subsequent unlimited employment after internal evaluation.




Duration of employment: 4 year/s

Extent of Employment: 40.0 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:
The candidate will contribute to the research goals of the DoME as a Senior Scientist with particular emphasis on applying state-of-the-art techniques in stable isotope experiments using cultures and environmental samples, single cell analyses and by supporting cultivation efforts. The candidate will also assist in building and maintaining scientific infrastructure such as membrane inlet mass spectrometry and bioreactors for large-scale biomass production of nitrifying microorganisms. Involvement in the acquisition of third-party funding is expected. The position includes some administration and teaching as regulated by the collective agreement. We invite applicants to submit their curriculum vitae (including a publication list, scientific accomplishments and a list of invited lectures if any), letter of intent and diplomas.

Profile:
Successful candidates should hold a doctoral degree in microbiology and have minimum 2 years postdoc research experience (international experience is preferred) related to microbial nitrogen cycling.

Ideally, the candidate has thorough knowledge of the process of nitrification. The job requires experience in diverse microbial ecology techniques including planning and conducting stable isotope probing experiments to assess microbial activity, correlative single-cell analyses (e.g. fluorescence in situ hybridization combined with nanoSIMS or Raman spectroscopy), and cultivation of slow growing microorganisms. Fieldwork experience and experience with membrane inlet mass spectrometry is highly desirable. Demonstrated aptitude for scientific writing and a track record of publications in international peer-reviewed journals is expected. Strong communication skills in English (written and spoken) are mandatory and communication skills in German are preferred. The ability to work in a team is essential. In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have experience in supervising students at the Bachelor or Master level.
