Bauhaus Luftfahrt is an interdisciplinary research institution funded by the four aerospace companies Airbus, Industrieanlagen-Betriebsgesellschaft (IABG), Liebherr-Aerospace, and MTU Aero Engines as well as grants from the Bavarian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Media, Energy, and Technology. The non-profit association is an internationally oriented think tank. Its team of around 50 employees deals with the future of mobility in general and with the development of air travel in particular. The goal of the research work is to consider the complex system of aviation from different points of view. In every project, the technical, economic, social, and ecological aspects are considered holistically.
One of our team’s research efforts is to establish a simulation environment to forecast future development scenarios of the air transport system. In this environment the dynamics of different stakeholders like passengers, airlines, airframers and airports are modeled. So far, constraints due to limited system capacities are not considered. Focus of the advertised thesis shall be the analysis of the decision-making process that leads airports to invest in expansion of their airside or landside capacity. The objective is to gain transparency about influencing factors (e.g. traffic volume, level of congestion, form of ownership or business model) and the generic structure of the investment decision process. A second emphasis shall be the analysis of the correlation between the identified influencing factors and parameters of actual investments.
» Familiarisation with the topics airport capacity, investment planning and decision-making processes, if necessary
» Literature review about characteristics of airport investments
» Identification and explanation of relevant factors that influence the airport’s decision, such as size, level of congestion, world region, form of ownership, or business model
» Development of generic decision-making process based on the collected information
» Determination of the correlation between the identified influencing factors and parameters of actual investments like amount, time and purpose
» Student (m/f) Business Administration, Economics, or Civil/Aerospace/Transportation Engineering with knowledge in economics
» Ideally existing knowledge of airports, air transportation, decision-making processes and/or investment planning
» Good knowledge of the English language
