Tenure track associate professorship in Medicine (human cognitive neuroscience)
About the position
To be at the forefront of research and education in human cognitive neuroscience, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is announcing a 6-year tenure-track associate professorship in Medicine, with emphasis on human brain imaging, at the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience (KISN).
NTNU and St. Olav‘s Hospital have a mutual strategy for integration of research activities including shared operation of advanced infrastructures for research. Results and competence from KISN shall ultimately contribute to clinical practice. In this respect, the position will form a bridge between KISN and St. Olav‘s Hospital.
The tenure track associate professor`s duties will primarily be research, including obligations regarding publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations. To a limited extent, the position may also include other duties. In the NTNU tenure-track programme, associate professors are subject to two evaluations during the tenure-track period:
A mid-career assessment after 3-4 years
A final tenure assessment after no more than 6 years
The overall purpose of the assessments is to ensure and maintain the high academic standards of the university`s senior faculty staff. To help meet these standards, the associate professor is offered a mentor. During the employment period as a tenure-track associate professor, the appointee must participate in the formal pedagogical training programme to qualify for a permanent position. The appointee`s performance will be evaluated after no more than 6 years of employment and, if the final appraisal ‘is positive, s/he will be employed as a full-time professor.
Main duties and responsibilities
Together with the Institute`s other academic staff, the person holding the post is responsible for research and teaching in the discipline of human cognitive neuroscience. This includes the person‘s own research, and supervision of students and postdocs in the discipline, as well as teaching at the Master program in neuroscience.
The candidate will work at the interface between KISN and the larger fMRI community of NTNU and St. Olav‘s Hospital. The successful candidate will play a key role in the newly established Norwegian 7T MR Center and the MR core facility. We expect the candidate to actively participate in and develop infrastructure and research in this community and to show a keen interest and experience in educating the next generation of neuroscientists. Emphasis will therefore be placed on ability and experience in initiating and leading research in the subject area.
The person holding the post is also obliged to take part in administrative duties and will have the function as a group leader.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in the subject area concerned or competence at a corresponding level and should be able to document professional qualifications as well as scientific expertise in one or more aspects of the discipline associated with this position. The doctoral degree should have been awarded no more than 5 years prior to the application deadline.
The candidate must be fluent in English, both spoken and written.
Other desirable qualifications:
We expect the candidate to be able to lead research and teach in the domain of human cognitive neuroscience, in addition to supervise and teach at the PhD level. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory but documented teaching qualifications and experience will be considered an advantage.
The person holding the post is expected to have a research record in studying human brain circuits, with emphasis on higher order cognitive (cortical) functions.
The person should have competence in human fMRI. Previous experience using ultra-high field 7T fMRI will be viewed as an asset. Experience developing novel behavioral and fMRI experimental paradigms is also desired.
Experience with clinical studies will be considered an advantage. Because of KISN‘s focus on experimental studies in animals, the Institute will favour candidates with interest or experience in translating animal studies to humans.
The successful candidate is expected to secure competitive research funding as a group leader. Previous successful funding will count positively. The candidate should have well-defined concepts on how to sustain and develop her/his research group based on a compatible start-up package.
The gross salary for the position of Associate Professor (code 1011) is normally from NOK 573 100 - 704 900, depending on qualifications and academic background. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
The person appointed must live in a location enabling him/her to be present at and available to the institution.
