at the Department of East Asian Studies

The position will be with the Chair of East Asian Economy and Society at the Department of East Asian Studies. Our focus is on modern East Asia (roughly covering the 20th and the 21st centuries), defined mainly as Northeast Asia (China, Japan, and the two Koreas) but also including the ten ASEAN members states of Southeast Asia. Our basic philosophy is that of critical Area Studies, i.e. we value a holistic approach that includes a solid command of at least one East Asian language, a perspective that goes beyond a single East Asian country, and the knowledge of the cultural background including history and literature. At the same time, we emphasize the compatibility of our research and teaching with established, non-area focused disciplines including, but not limited to, history, economics, sociology, and political science.

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
Competitive applicants will have a clear research agenda, a strong theoretical orientation, excellent methodological skills, a record of publishing in refereed journals and academic presses, and – importantly – demonstrate their ability for independent, effective and methodologically rigorous teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels as defined by the collective agreement. Additional expectations include supervision of students and active engagement with the other fields represented at the University of Vienna Department of East Asian Studies and facilitation of connections between the University of Vienna and East Asia.
Profile:
Applicants from political science (international relations, political systems, comparative politics) or economics (political economy, economic policy) whose research has a focus on East Asia or a country of East Asia (China, Japan, Korea, or Southeast Asia) are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have a formal academic degree (either MA or PhD) in the social sciences, preferably political science or economics, in addition to a formal academic degree (at least a BA) in East Asian Studies. One of these degrees must be a PhD. A very good command of at least one East Asian language and the ability to conduct research in that language is required. This can be Chinese, Korean, Japanese or a Southeast Asian language. The successful candidate is expected to teach, among others, courses on International Relations in East Asia and on Political Systems in East Asia, as well as an Exercise Course on Economic Systems in East Asia. Teaching will include the supervision of academic term papers. A research interest in East Asia must be demonstrated.

- Publications in renowned, subject-relevant media (peer-reviewed, depending on the professional standards)
- International presentation experience
