The Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP) is home to over 140 doctoral candidates in Physics at the University of Vienna who work at the forefront of science. On their way to an internationally competitive PhD in Physics our students receive training, mentoring and support to become independent researchers and to connect with the local and wider science community.
The Faculty of the VDSP offers a paid position for a talented and motivated doctoral candidate in Physics interested in non-equilibrium phenomena in soft matter to start at the earliest convenience with a contract duration of 4 years.

The employment relationship is initially limited to 1.5 years and automatically extended to a total of 4 years, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.

Job Description:
Soft matter systems are often out-of-equilibrium because intrinsically active (e.g. bacterial suspensions or cell tissues) or because they find themselves in dynamically arrested states (e.g. gels and glasses), or because they are driven by external perturbations (e.g. mechanical shear or thermal gradients). Capturing experimentally the complexity underlying all these systems is an ongoing challenge, which requires simultaneous access to multiple space and time scales. Under the supervision of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Roberto Cerbino, successful candidates will address this challenge, by developing novel experimental tools to probe and characterize non-equilibrium phenomena in soft matter. The specific project can be tailored to the skills and interests of the successful candidate but must align with one of the active areas of the group research: non-equilibrium fluctuations in microgravity conditions, collective motility of biological cells, mechanical failure of soft materials, colloidal thermophoresis and other transport phenomena in complex fluids. The project will involve collaborations with national and international universities and research centers, and related occasional travels. Candidates should hold a diploma/master degree in experimental physics, material sciences, or a related field. Knowledge and experience in design and construction of experimental setups, and scientific programming are particularly appreciated.

We expect the successful candidate to participate in research, teaching and administration, including:
- Active participation in research projects, including designing, preparing, and performing experiments, analyzing scientific data, developing physical models, and performing analytical and numerical calculations.
- Participation in publications / academic articles / presentations
- Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
- Support in the supervision of students
- Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums
- Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration.
The successful applicant is required to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months and to become an active member of the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics.



Profile:
MSc or equivalent in a field of study of or related to the doctoral project. This requirement needs to be fulfilled until the start of the employment.
