The group of Sebastian Falk at the Max Perutz Labs is recruiting a PhD student. The candidate will work on the project: ‚Structural and functional characterizsation of the small RNA biogenesis machinery‘. The ideal candidate should have experience in the production of recombinant proteins and the purification of proteins using chromatographic techniques. Basic knowledge in the biophysical characterization of proteins and experience in protein crystallisation is a must. Furthermore, the ideal candidate has intial experience with structure determination (e.g. molecular replacement) and model building.
Duration of employment: 3 year/s
Extent of Employment: 30.0 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
Participation in research, teaching and administration: - Participation in research projects / research studies - Participation in publications / academic articles / presentations - We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months. - Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement - Supervision of students - Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums - Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration
Profile:
The ideal candidate should have a Master degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Structural Biology and/or related areas. Knowledge of production and purification of protein – modelling and display of protein structure - High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing - Excellent command of written and spoken English - IT user skills - Ability to work in a team – You need to have successfully passed the VBC/MFPL-PhD selection.
Work with insect cell culture for protein production - Refolding of proteins from inclusion bodies - Structural modelling of protein complexes - Knowledge of university processes and structures - Experience abroad - Basic experience in research methods and academic writing
