at the Research Platform The Challenge of Urban Futures: governing the complexities in European cities

Urban Futures is a University of Vienna funded Research Platform striving to govern the challenges of the future of European cities. We search for a PhD student at the exiting interface of Environmental Science and Pollution Research with Advanced Computational Science / Data Science. Hosted by the Urban Futures Platform, the successful candidate will be embedded in an active and international leading research team linked to the Department of Environmental Geosciences and the Research Network Data Science.
The successful candidate will be assigned to both the Urban Futures Research Platform and the Department of Environmental Geosciences.

Job Description:
Active participation in research, teaching, and service is expected. This includes:
- Active Participation in the Platform Urban Futures and the Department of Environmental Geosciences
- Developing and strengthening an independent research profile and conducting a PhD Thesis at the Interface of Urban Pollution Research and Data/Computer Science
- Publishing/presenting in leading journals/at leading conferences
- Teaching, as defined by the collective agreement
Profile:
The successful candidate is expected to have:
- A master degree in Data Science, or Computer Science
- Good expertise with methods in modern data science, including, but not limited to machine learning, human computer interaction, visual data analysis
- learning, human computer interaction, visual data analysis
- excellent programming skills (C++, Java, python, R)
- very good mathematical skills
- very good skills in visual data analysis (including expertise in D3 and Tableau)
- High interest in solving pressing environmental problems stemming from anthropogenic pollution, such as for example, but not limited to, persistent organic pollutants, plastic pollution, non-exhaust traffic particulate emissions, waste incineration with modern data science tools.
- Ability to work in an international team
- Ability to fluently communicate, teach, and write in English
Desirable qualifications are:
- Experience with working abroad and international cooperation
- Experience/interest with environmental and interdisciplinary sciences
- Excellent writing skills
