The Centre for Islamic Theology of the University of Münster seeks to fill the following position at the earliest possible date:
W1-level assistant professorship (Juniorprofessur)
with a W2 tenure track in “Sira and Islamic history”
With respect to content and methodology, the prospective candidate shall represent the entire spectrum of research and teaching in the subject area of “Sira and Islamic history”. The candidate will be expected to teach courses, supervise bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral theses, and contribute to expanding the Centre for Islamic Theology in Münster.
The chair is assigned to the Centre for Islamic Theology at the University of Münster. Consequently, the candidate will be expected to work closely with the other areas of the Centre. Furthermore, the candidate will be required to assume some of the administrative tasks at the Centre.
To be considered for this position, the candidate must hold a university-level degree in Islamic theology or Islamic studies with specialisation in Sira and Islamic history or another subject‑relevant discipline. Specialisation in Sira and Islamic history can also be substantiated through research and teaching experience gained in connection to a doctoral degree or comparable qualification.
The candidate is expected to substantiate their research and teaching experience in the area “Sira and Islamic history”, as well as possess excellent language skills in both German and classical and modern Arabic. As part of our efforts to establish Islamic theology at the University of Münster, we are strongly interested in candidates who are internationally networked with the Islamic world. Consequently, this professorship should possess an international profile and have ties to the latest international research in “Sira and Islamic history” as well as other research activities which focus on “history”. By means of interdisciplinary networking, we wish to forge bridges to other subjects which address religions in historical and contemporary contexts. Consequently, this professorship should have an interdisciplinary orientation. The prospective appointee is therefore required to possess the corresponding skills in this regard.
The candidate should possess pedagogical aptitude and be especially adept at pursuing advanced, independent research which is generally substantiated by a subject‑relevant, above‑average doctoral degree. Research and teaching experience in the area “Sira and Islamic history” should be appropriately substantiated.
The position is initially limited to three years with the possibility of a three‑year extension following a positive interim evaluation. Upon receiving a positive final evaluation, the appointee will be granted a permanent W2‑level appointment.
The University of Münster strongly supports equal opportunity and diversity. We welcome all applicants regardless of sex, nationality, ethnic or social background, religion or worldview, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender identity. We are committed to creating family-friendly working conditions.
We actively encourage applications by women. Women with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered unless these are outweighed by reasons which necessitate the selection of another candidate.
