Associate Professorship in Electrical/Control Engineering

Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology. The department carries out research within computer science, data Science, cybernetics and signal processing, and offers bachelor programs in electrica engineering and computer science, master programs in computer science, data science and cybernetics/signal processing, and a PhD program in information technology. There are currently 50 employees, including research fellows and postdocs, and 600 students at the department.
Associate Professor in Electrical/Control Engineering
The University of Stavanger is seeking an Associate Professor in Electrical/Control Engineering. The position is vacant from 01.04.2019.
Duties and academic community
The subject area for the position is Electrical Engineering/Control Engineering.
The position is organisationally affiliated to the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. At the Department, there are research groups working with Cloud Computing, Biomedical data analysis, Information Access and Interaction, Distributed Systems, Blockchain Technology, System Biology, Robotics, Signal and Image Processing and Energy Informatics.
As an Associate Professor, you will primarily teach and supervise students at Bachelor's, Master's and PhD level within Electrical Engineering/Control Engineering, conduct research and disseminate research results within relevant research fields at the department, and contribute to the development of partnerships with businesses. The development/use of digital and diverse learning methods, innovation, value creation based on results from research, and academic development work, will be included in the position. We are seeking an associate professor with a PhD or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering/Control Engineering with specialization and documented solid theoretical competence in at least one of the following fields:
The appointee will participate in collaborative research with existing research groups at the Department.
You must be able to document pedagogical and didactic skills relating to higher education, or complete a university pedagogy course within a period of two years of the appointment start date. The course will be provided by the university.

Ability to involve and engage students in teaching, where the course's objectives, content and assessment situations are closely interlinked.
Experience and/or interest in the development of varied learning methods and digital tools in teaching.
Research results published in recognised Norwegian and international publications, and references indicating progression in research and publications.
Ability to initiate, obtain external funding for, drive forward and carry out research and development projects.
Experience of partnerships with businesses.
Ability to build and nurture networks - regionally, nationally and internationally.
Experience with innovation and commercialisation of research.
Ability to manage a heavy workload, inquisitiveness and motivation to develop new knowledge in collaboration with others.
Good teamwork, communication skills, and ability to contribute to a constructive working environment.
The working and teaching languages are Norwegian and English. If you do not have a good command of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, you must acquire Norwegian language skills equivalent to level B2 within a period of two years of the appointment start date. If required, you will be offered a Norwegian course paid for by the university. It is an advantage for applicants who can teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at accession.
In the absence of applicants with sufficient scientific expertise, the university may consider temporarily designating an appointee for up to three years, during which time he/she will endeavour to gain the qualifications necessary for a permanent position. The applicant must be capable of gaining the necessary qualifications during the period of employment.

Your application will be assessed by an expert committee. In the expert assessment, emphasis will be placed on submitted scientific works, and documented teaching competence. The committee will also assess your experience with popularisation/dissemination activities, university politics and administration, and any other documented qualifications relevant to the position.
If a large number of applications is received, it may be necessary to reject some applications before the associated documents are sent to the expert committee for assessment. This will apply to applicants who do not satisfy key qualification requirements.
Based on the expert committee's statement, relevant applicants will be invited to an interview and a teaching demonstration before any recommendations are made.

The successful applicant will be expected to support and participate in other faculty activities and to be able to perform tasks across departments and faculties.
An annual plan for future work will be established following discussion between the head of the department and associate professor, in accordance with the university's guidelines for work-planning.
UiS expects all scientific staff to undergo continuous training in relation to their own teaching and research.
During their first year, associate professors must participate in the university's colleague-based guidance programme, NyTi.
Associate professors who are unable to document sufficient pedagogic and didactic expertise with regards to higher education must complete a university pedagogy course within two years from their appointment.
Associate professors who do not have a command of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language must acquire Norwegian language skills equivalent to level B2 (in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Language) within a period of two years of the appointment start date.
