The German Aerospace Center DLR / ESTECNoordwijk (Niederlande)
Start your mission with DLR.
The German Aerospace Center DLR has a dual mandate as the national research center for aeronautics and space, and as the space agency of the
German federal government. Approximately 8,000 people work for DLR on a uniquely diverse range of topics spanning the fields of aeronautics,
space, energy, transport and security research. They collaborate on projects extending from fundamental research to the development of the
innovative applications and products of the future. If the idea of joining a top-class team of researchers working in a supportive, inspirational
environment appeals to you, then why not launch your mission with us?
For our German Trainee Programme (GTP) in cooperation with ESTEC, Noordwijk, NL, we wish to recruit a
Engineer Telecommunications, Engineer Aerospace or similar
Future PNT System Concepts
Have you (almost) completed your degree studies? Are you inspired by space exploration and keen to pursue a career in this exciting field?
If so, perhaps you should take a closer look at the German Trainee Programme. Organised by DLR, it offers you the chance to work shoulder
to shoulder with experts from the 22 member states of ESA - keeping your finger on the pulse of Europe’s space programmes. Over a period
up to 24 months, you will actively contribute to the latest research and/or technology projects. This is complemented by a generous scholarship.
What better way to launch your career in international space business? The next GTP commences on 1 February 2018.
This is your opportunity to join the team at ESTEC, Noordwijk, NL GTP-2018-NAV-PFS(2) - Future PNT System Concepts
ESA has the role of design authority for GALILEO. GALILEO is a Global Navigation Satellite System able to deliver Position, Navigation and
Timing (PNT) in an autonomous way based on similar principles as GPS. GALILEO is currently under deployment and will be able to offer future
Open Services, Commercial Services and Public Regulated Services; it will also contribute to the COSPAS-SARSAT Search and Rescue. GALILEO
will work in a multi constellation environment in which other similar systems (GPS, GLONASS, BEIDOU, IRNSS and QZSS) are deployed or under
deployment. In addition, other satellite communications systems and concepts such as Iridium, Globalstar and the mega-constellation initiatives
intend to or are analysing the capability to provide PNT to complement or even replace GNSS in specific environments where GNSS turns out to
be weak. Those environments comprise urban areas, outdoor-to-indoor transition and indoors. Also terrestrial cellular communications standards,
such as 5G, are addressing more and more the capability to offer PNT.
Today GNSS is the baseline solution for PNT. GNSS multi-constellation is a "de facto" standard partly considered in the initial definitions of
the current GNSS systems. But society demands more and more ubiquitous, accurate and reliable positioning. PNT is more and more present in wearables,
internet of the things devices, personal communication devices, UAVs and cars. Therefore a growth in complementary and competing solutions to GNSS
can be foreseen. The user segment also follows this trend by offering hybrid solutions where a single position processor is able to handle inputs
from different front-ends, each one getting measurements from different PNT systems. Hybridisation with inertial sensors is a common practice in
user equipment as well.
As GALILEO deployment progresses, ESA and the Programme Authorities are also engaged in defining the GALILEO 2nd Generation. The 2nd generation
seeks the improvement in coverage, accuracy, time to fix and vulnerability of PNT services through addition of new system concepts and innovative
technologies. Nevertheless, in this fast evolving PNT environment, the 2nd Generation needs to consider the full PNT landscape in order to be
able to establish the correct evolution direct and requirements.
This work is carried out by the GALILEO 2nd Generation team, under the Directorate of the GALILEO Programme and Navigation-related Activities
(D/NAV). The Trainee would take part of the system-level activities in support of the definition of new system concepts for the GALILEO 2nd
Generation with focus on the current PNT landscape, its evolution and what the GALILEO 2nd Generation can add to the future PNT users.
analysis of existing and prospective Satellite-based PNT systems from a service volume point of view (coverage in realistic environments,
availability, accuracy) and from a user point of view (user application, high level receiver architecture, complexity and cost, power consumption and integration in user platforms, etc)
analysis of existing and prospective terrestrial PNT systems from a service volume point of view (coverage in realistic environments, availability, accuracy) and from a user point of view
analysis of the capabilities of PNT sensor augmentation systems (inertial units, magnetometers, cameras, ...) in combination with other PNT systems
assessment of the synergies and weaknesses of the different PNT systems versus GNSS
synthesis of recommendations and system-level specifications for the GALILEO 2nd Generation in order to make it fit optimally in the future PNT landscape
the work requires the development and usage of analytical and simulation tools
Please apply by 6 September 2017.
Telecommunications/Aerospace engineering or equivalent
knowledge of Matlab, STK and similar tools is an asset
German citizenship is absolutely necessary
Applicants should have just completed (conclusion not older than two years) or be in their final year of a university course at Master’s level in a technical or scientific discipline.
candidates must be fluent in English or French, the official languages of the agency
