for a professorship at the Institute of Physics:
Junior Professorship
(W1) with Tenure Track
(W3) “Theory of Solid-State Physics”

Applications are welcome from outstanding, internationally visible researchers proven and
qualified, through research and teaching, in an innovative and future-oriented research area
of the Theory of Solid-State Physics. Individuals with research experience in
- the theory of surfaces and interfaces,
- the modelling of many-particle physics within density functional theory,
- the simulation of non-equilibrium processes, or
- light-matter interaction
are particularly encouraged to apply.
The appointee is expected to continue his/her research and teaching excellence in the
aforementioned areas and to further develop his/her field of expertise in cooperation with
the departments of the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Micro- and Nanotechnologies.
The successful applicant will teach classes in Theoretical Physics of the bachelor and master
curricula “Technical Physics” in German and English. The prerequisites are pedagogical
aptitude and the commitment to contribute to the further development and advancement of
the curricula. The future holder of the position should additionally actively participate in the
academic self-administration.
The professorship is funded by the programme for the promotion of academics in an early
stage of their career that has recently been approved by the German Federal Government.
With the tenure-track procedure the Technical University Ilmenau provides a reliable and
transparent career path to lifelong professorship, and thus aims to bind excellent academics at
an early stage and provide them with targeted support. Therefore, scientists at the beginning
of their independent career, ideally within 4 years after receiving their PhD, are encouraged to
apply. Applications from female scientists in an early career phase are especially encouraged.
The recruitment requirements and conditions of §89 of the Thuringian Higher Education Act
apply. The initial appointment to the junior professorship (W1) will be evaluated after three
years and, if applicable, continued for another period of three years.Apositive evaluation after
six years results in the appointment to a lifetime W3 university professorship without a new
