The Institute of Geosciences of the Faculty of Chemistry, Pharmacy, and
Geoscience at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz invites applications
for a tenure-track appointment at the level of
Junior Professor (m/f)
of Metamorphic Processes
(Salary class W1 with tenure track toaW2 position; LBesG)
starting in 2019 in the broad field of metamorphic processes. Candidates with a
strong research record in developing computational methods and/or thermodynamic
models to understand metamorphic (and magmatic) reactions and applying those
or other novel methods to understand metamorphic processes in the broad sense
are particularly encouraged to apply.
The Institute of Geosciences is equipped with modern analytical, experimental,
computational and teaching facilities and has a dynamic and very international
research team. This position is part of a cluster hire to further strengthen the
institute's two main research directions in "Dynamics of the Solid Earth" and
"Paleoclimatology", along with other ongoing faculty searches in Tectonics/
Structural Geology and Sedimentary Geochemistry.
We seek a creative individual with a willingness to collaborate across discipline
boundaries and interact with faculty and students. They are expected to complement
our existing research strengths, e.g., volcanology, petrology, geodynamics,
and paleoclimatology. The ideal candidate shows strong promise to become a
leader in the research field and is interested and capable to collaborate in an
interdisciplinary manner. Experience in attracting third-party funding and a record
of innovative teaching are desired.
In teaching, the broad fields of metamorphic geology at BSc and MSc level are
to be covered, including field-based methods. Part of the teaching can be done
in English, but we expect a willingness to learn German in a reasonable amount
of time. Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to participate in service
roles within the institute.
The professorship is funded by the Tenure Track program of the German federal
and state governments. Early career researchers are therefore addressed in
particular. Applicants must meet the general requirements according to public
services law and the Higher Education Act of Rhineland-Palatinate (§§ 54, 55
Hochschulgesetz – Higher Education Act).
The initial contract will run for three years and will be extended for another three
years contingent upon a successful intermediate evaluation. Accordingly, after a
final successful evaluation as junior professor after six years and provided that
the general requirements are fulfilled, the candidate will qualify for appointment
to a tenured full professorship (W2).
The State of Rhineland-Palatinate and Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz
are committed to intensive personal mentoring for students and, therefore, expect
a strong presence of teaching staff at the University.
The Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz aims to increase the proportion
of women in research and teaching and is therefore particularly interested in
applications from women.
Disabled candidates with adequate qualification will be given priority.
Interested applicants should send a document comprising a cover letter, CV,
degree certificates, overview of teaching experience, publication list and a
statement outlining your planned research and teaching directions as well as
copies of up to five key publications, and a form that can be downloaded from http://www.geowiss.uni-mainz.de/2501_ENG_HTML.php.
Applications in electronic form should be sent by August 22, 2018 as a single
PDF file to
