At the Department of Mathematics (http://www.uib.no/math/en) there is a vacancy for up to two PhD positions in pure or applied mathematics from August 2019. The positions are for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility for a 4th year.
About the department
The Department of Mathematics offers an internationally oriented and dynamic work environment, with a strong focus on basic research. We offer study programs in the mathematical sciences at the bachelor‘s, master‘s and Ph.D. levels, and we are also very active in mathematics education. The department currently has 31 permanent faculty members, who conduct research in a wide range of pure and applied mathematics, statistics and didactics of mathematics.
About the project/work tasks:
We seek highly motivated candidates with a strong background in advanced mathematics (pure or applied). The position is intended to give promising candidates the opportunity to pursue advanced research leading to a PhD degree within one of the research fields of mathematics represented in the department. These fields are algebra, algebraic geometry, analysis and PDE, biomathematics, computational mathematics, fluid mechanics, image processing, porous media and topology.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
Applicants must hold a master‘s degree or the equivalent in mathematics (pure or applied). Master students can also apply, provided they complete their final master exam before 31 July 2019. It is a condition of employment that the master‘s degree has been awarded.
Applicants must document a strong background in advanced mathematics, give a clear motivation for applying, and describe how they see themselves fit into the position.
Experience with one of the research topics in the department of mathematics is an advantage.
Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English
Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
About the PhD position:
The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with the possibility for a 4th year, consisting of 25 % compulsory work (e.g. teaching responsibilities at the department) distributed across the employment period. The 4th year is contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department, and will be decided upon appointment. Normally, a 4th year is only given to candidates fluent in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.
The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a PhD position.
About the research training
As a PhD candidate, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. A final plan for the implementation of the research training must be approved by the faculty within three months after you have commenced in the position. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.

Salary at pay grade 51 (Code 1017/Pay range 20, alternative 9) in the state salary scale. This constitutes a gross annual salary of NOK 449 400. Further promotions are made according to length of service in the position.
