PhD Position in Membrane
technology development
for scrubber wastewater treatment from ships
In internationally operating filter manufacturer and Flensburg University of Applied Sciences (FUAS), are offering in
the joint project a PhD position for a candidate with a background in process, mechanical or chemical engineering, automation, or marine
technologies. Beyond that, a high affinity to project management and independent work are presupposed.
The candidate will explore a current research field in marine environmental protection. A unique installation for bleed-off wastewater
treatment from ships located “on shore” at Flensburg University of Applied Sciences and funded by the German federal government
will provide the framework for this research. The candidate will also be expected to supervise students writing their Bachelor’s and
Master’s theses on related topics.
The future IMO regulations require the development of efficient technical solutions for the reduction of scrubber wash water pollutants
being released into the sea. The PhD project focusses on conducting interdisciplinary research at the interface of the application of
innovative membrane technology for scrubber waste water treatment from ships. The project aims at making theoretical and practical
contributions on membrane technology development and its simulation behavior in long-time studies on the operation of such technologies
with aggressive scrubber waste water. One example for the application of the results obtained from this project is the development of
powerful bleed-off treatment units for marine application.
The successful applicant will work at the Centre for Maritime Studies at Flensburg University of Applied Sciences and will be officially
enrolled as a PhD candidate at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense. After successfully completing the PhD, our partner university,
the SDU, will also award the title of PhD.
More than 4,000 students are enrolled in 18 degree programmes at Flensburg University of Applied Sciences (FUAS). At FUAS, we research and
teach in state-of-the-art laboratories and lecture halls located on a spacious and green campus. Flensburg’s maritime flair and its
location right at the Baltic Sea make it a great place to live.
