Liebig University Giessen (JLU), member of the
German Center for Lung Research (DZL), is currently establishing the
Institute for Lung Health (ILH) and invites
applications for one professorship as of now.
W1 Professorship (with W2 tenure track) for
Pathogen-induced Lung Injury and Repair

The position is offered for a period of six years pursuant to § 64 Para. 3 and 4 HHG. According to § 64 Para. 3 HHG, the applicant should have gained a doctoral degree at an
institution of higher education other than JLU or have been in academic employment at an institution other than JLU for at least two years after conferral of a doctoral degree. The
duration of said post-doctoral employment may not exceed four years or, in the case of successful completion of further academic training pursuant to § 62 Para. 6 HHG, may
not exceed seven years. In the case of successful completion of the six-year W1 position, which is to be assessed in an evaluation procedure pursuant to § 64 Para. 2 HHG, the
appointment will be converted into a permanent W2 professorship.
Duties:
The professorship is associated with the Chair of Infectious Diseases of the Lung. The successful candidate will establish and lead her/his own research group, be in charge of
graduate students during their PhD studies and generally represent the field in research and education. The topic includes analysis of regeneration processes in the lung after
infectious/inflammatory damage on molecular and cell biological levels, with the aim of developing novel therapeutic approaches. In the course of academic employment at the
JLU, the successful acquisition of external funding will be expected. Applicants are expected to cooperate with the local and national research consortia mentioned under 1. and 2.
Requirements:
Applicants are expected to have an internationally recognized scientific track record in the field as well as technological expertise relevant to the field (such as transgenic animal models,
next generation sequencing, single cell analysis etc.). The ability for interdisciplinary work is a prerequisite. First experiences with the acquisition of external funding are desirable.
Applicants are required to have an excellent academic degree in natural sciences or medicine as well as a doctoral degree with excellent grades. We also request teaching
experience as well as documented pedagogical abilities.
The ILH is a unique and novel institute supported by federal and state funding, operated under the umbrella of the DZL with its Universities of Giessen and Marburg Lung Center
(UGMLC) site and located at the JLU. A new research building harboring this institute will be constructed at the Biomedical Research Campus of the JLU, hosting the Biomedical
Research Center Seltersberg building, the Excellence Cluster Cardio Pulmonary Institute building, and the Center for Infection and Genomics of the Lung building. In this vibrant
environment of internationally renowned basic and translational lung research, the ILH will focus on the parenchymal/vascular compartment in lung physiology and disease, with
"Resilience, Remodeling, Repair and Regeneration (R4)" as joint topics.
